The Energy Commission says it continues to ensure the provision of affordable energy supplies in a reliable, efficient and secure manner.
According to the Commission in a press statement, its operations are presently being fully financed by the government.
The Commission’s statement is in response to a press briefing by the Minority, where the NDC MPs indicated that the Energy Commission has seen its budget slashed by more than half by the incumbent administration.
For the Minority, the Commission has been rendered ineffective, therefore worsening the country’s erratic power supply.
In 2017, the Akufo-Addo administration capped the Energy Commission’s budget about 34 per cent in accordance with the Earmarked Funds Capping and Realignment Act, 2017 (Act 947).
The decision by government took effect from May 2017 to 2018.
But according to the Commission, since 2019, it has had its budget fully financed by the government.
The Commission’s Head of Public Affairs in the press statement indicated that the Ministry of Finance in a letter dated January 4, 2019, rescinded the decision to slash its budget by more than half on the account of the Capping and Realignment Act.
“Subsequently, the Commission has been receiving yearly letters from the Ministry of Finance confirming the removal of the cap,” the statement added.
The Energy Commission is therefore giving the assurance that it “continues to perform its functions as prescribed by law,” and not ineffective as indicated by the Minority.
