The Volta secessionist group currently facing treason charges in Court was created by the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the last general election to create confusion and rig the 2020 polls, Director of Elections of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) claims.
According to a former Minister of Youth and Sports under the erstwhile National Democratic Congress (NDC), Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, as part of the NPP government grand schemes to rig the elections, the group was formed to suppress votes in the stronghold of the opposition and terrorize residents.
“During the COVID era, especially in the Volta Region, they created the so-called secessionist group to give them an excuse to send security forces into Volta Region and that their presence, and then close the boarders using that as an excuse to deploy security forces in the Volta Region which is an NDC stronghold and to intimidate people and cause a lot of confusion and to prevent people from registration”, he claimed.
In an exclusive interview on Kumasi-based Orange 107.9 monitored by MyNewsGh.com, he criticized the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jane Mensa and the ruling NPP government she allegedly connived to steal the electorates’ mandate for President Akufo-Addo.
Mr. Elvis Afriyie Ankrah explained that despite the solid team which represented NDC party at all levels, the Electoral Commissioner and her deputies were able to swindle them with a call for a new voters’ register at the time.
“Elections are not won on the election year alone. The processes of manipulating the elections start with the registration. We had a biometric register in 2016 and Jane Mensah comes and says we have to throw that way. What’s the basis?” The NDC Director of Elections quizzed while giving credit to his team members.
“These are guys who have been around for a long time and they understand the system, they understand the processes, they are thorough and I am privilege to have such a team working with”, Mr. Elvis Afriyie Ankrah replied when asked about the competence of people who represented the NDC party at various collation centers.
