Criminals, especially armed robbers will in the coming days be faced squarely by special forces set up by the acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP) in the Greater Accra area.
The development comes after reports of daylight robberies inundated discussions on traditional and social media last week.
Tema, Teshie-Nungua, Weija, and the Achimota area recorded daylight robbery cases last week which sent shock to most residents of Accra and elsewhere in the country because some of the crimes that were captured by CCT cameras showed that the crime scenes were quite busy places.
Strategy
The acting IGP, Dr Dampare, has outlined a new strategy to control criminal activities in communities across the country.
Speaking to Power News, the Director of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, ACP Kwesi Ofori, has assured that incidents of robbery in the country are under control.
“Through intelligence-led policing, we are embarking on more swoops to ensure that the police nib criminal activities in the bud before they get out of hand,” he told Power News’ Odeefuo Berchie on Wednesday.
This comes after the Police in the Ashanti Region arrested some 396 suspects and impounded 792 motorbikes in a swoop Wednesday.
ACP Kwesi Ofori indicated that the suspects would be screened before they are arraigned before court for possible prosecution.
“Some of these suspects are likely to be on the police wanted list,” he added in anticipation of an identification parade and stressed that the police administration has deployed a number of strategies including increased patrol and visibility to check the situation.
“So we are always on alert and moving everywhere to curb criminal activities. We know what criminals are doing with the motorbikes, so if you have one and you don’t have the requisite documents,you are in trouble.”
He hinted that all regional police commands have met and have been charged to come up with different strategies to fight crime in their respective jurisdictions.
“We are not sitting down aloof. We are so involved in running the show in those areas,” he said. “The swoops are well directed and the regional commanders have been urged to sustain it.”
