Tertiary Education Institution Network (TEIN) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has ordered President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to render an apology over a statement he made regarding the scanty salaries of teachers in the country.

Akufo Addo in a video that went viral some weeks ago said no one in the world can become a millionaire just by being a teacher alone.

According to the President, teaching is a sacrificial job and one cannot do teaching and expect to be a millionaire.

Nana Addo made this known when the leadership of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) paid a courtesy call on the President to invite him to their 94th Anniversary.

He added that teachers will have to do more… rely on other streams of income and pursue other careers if they really wanna experience what financial independence means.

The comments by the President received varied interpretations.

Following the strike declared by the University Teachers Association of Ghana, (UTAG) over what it said was the failure of the government to restore the 2012 salary levels of its members, Ekow Djan, National Secretary of the opposition of TEIN has asked the president to use the opportunity at hand to retract and apologise to all teachers.

Speaking on Power FM, he said the time was opportune for the president to revisit and make amends for his statement.

“The president also made a statement recently that teachers cannot be millionaires but we are taking the opportunity through your outfit to appeal to him to retract and apologize for the comment.

“To show he is an elderly person and that what he said, he did not say it well and that he is sorry,” he stressed.
