Beneficiaries of the Nation Builders Corps (NABCo) programme have asked the Akufo-Addo administration to redeem its promise of permanent jobs.
Clad in black and red amidst chanting, the aggrieved trainees took to the principal streets of the Greater Accra Region to drum home their displeasure.
The protestors wielded placards that had inscriptions such as “Mr President, where are the permanent jobs?” “When are you going to pay our 10 months arrears, Mr. President? NABCo Nurses also matter.”
Others had placards with these inscriptions, “We need our 4 months arrears to take care of our families.” “We are interested in permanent jobs and not GHC699.25 allawa!” “NABCo trainees deserve permanent employment, stop selling jobs!”
The aggrieved youth also described government’s assertion that about 39,000 trainees have gotten permanent employment as “a figment of imagination”.
Prior to the demonstration, some trainees took to social media to demand payment of their allowance arrears, saying life has become unbearable for them.
They also accused government of abandoning them, adding that they have been “perishing in extreme hunger and deprivation.”
Meanwhile, the Management of NABCo on Friday, February 11, announced that the allowance arrears for Career Path Training Programme (CPTP) and ‘Heal Ghana’ trainees have been processed for payment.
According to the Management, some of the beneficiaries under those batches have been paid.
“Kindly note that a section of ‘Revenue Ghana’ will be paid after this first batch of payments. Any arrears owed will equally be processed and paid subsequently,” a notice from NABCo Management added.
However, the protestors who hit the street on Thursday, insist that they deserve better.
They asked President Akufo-Addo to honour his promise ahead of the 2020 elections that they will be retained as permanent workers.
