A coronavirus sensitization program will be held for all headteachers and other teaching staff of the various Junior High Schools (JHS) across the country, according to the President, Nana Akufo-Addo.
This comes on the back of the last implementation of the reopening of schools agenda by the government amidst the coronavirus pandemic.
Final year students of secondary and tertiary institutions have already returned to school.
However, JHS final year students will from today, June 29, 2020 resume school in preparation for their exit examination.
In all, 750,000 persons, comprising 532,000 JHS 3 students, and 218,000 teaching and non-teaching staff, and invigilators are returning to the 7,439 schools across the country.
They will be in school for 11 weeks of preparation and revision, before spending the following week to take the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
“We are determined to ensure the same level of conformity in our Junior High Schools. So through the district directors of education and the district directors of health, a COVID-19 sensitization program will be organised for all headteachers and their teaching staff from Monday, the first day of school. This will ensure that the dos and don’ts of the protocols are clearly spelt out to the headteachers for onward transmission to the students,” Akufo-Addo said in his 13th national address on Sunday, June 28.
Many parents and guardians have expressed worry about their children returning to school now that the number of coronavirus cases is on the rise every day.
Ghana’s current case count stands at 17, 351.
Even though there are various calls for mass testing all teachers and students, the President has assured guardians of government’s commitment to safeguarding the lives of all students, teaching and other auxiliary staff members as they resume academic activities.
He has already set up a special task force to ensure the safe re-opening of schools for final year students.
Among other duties, the task force is overseeing the provision of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and also ensure strict enforcement of COVID-19 safety protocols.
