Director-General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Dr. John Ofori-Tenkorang is worried about the huge number of inactive contributors on their database.

He indicated that the Trust registered over one million subscribers on the SSNIT between the year 2016 to 2020 but only 4 000 are active contributors whiles the over 6,000 new registrants are not active.

Speaking at the 2021 Operations Conference of SSNIT under the theme: ‘Ensuring sustainability of the SSNIT Scheme, through effective and efficient operational business processes; leveraging modern and reliable technology,’ Dr. Ofori-Tenkorang hinted that, in spite of the 56-year existence of the Trust, only 1.7 million out of the over 5 million registered members are active contributors, a situation he says needs to be remedied.

He, however, acknowledged the journey of innovation, improved service delivery and general transformation that has occurred over the period but charged managers of the scheme to up their game and educate the Ghanaian population on the need to subscribe to SSNIT in their own interest.

He said the Scheme aims to convert as many of the 13 million or so players in the informal sector to voluntary SSNIT or first-tier contributors.

Deputy Director-General in charge of Operations and Benefits, Laurette Korkor Otchere said the Sustainability of the SSNIT Scheme is essential and must be the bedrock on which managers operate.

She said, modern businesses are not done in brick and mortar hence SSNIT is adapting to the new trend of doing business.

Laurette Korkor Otchere said, effective next year, they would introduce what is called SSNIT on Wheels or a mobile office which would move from one place to the other to provide all the services one could get from the office.

She added that they would also introduce online registration to cut the human interaction and help enroll many people on the scheme.
