The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr. Osman Nuhu Sharubutu has called out the New Patriotic Party for their response to the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference.
“Are those managing the public purse not concerned about waste and misapplication of resources that belong to all Ghanaians? Can this be referred to as irresponsible use of power or the lack of empathy and compassion?” Archbishop Naameh questioned.
But the NPP through its Director of Communications, Yaw Buaben Asamoa in a response hit back at the Bishops for criticising government’s management of the public purse.
Following this response from the NPP, the National Chief Imam has registered its displeasure about how the NPP is treating the bishops in their responses.
According to the Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference are being citizens and not spectators in their criticisms of the Akufo-Addo-led government.
Speaking on GTV Breakfast Show, spokesperson of the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu said the statement by the Catholic Bishops is in direct agreement with President Akufo-Addo’s charge to Ghanaians to be citizens and not spectators when he took over power in 2016.
“In the President’s inaugural speech, he made a very profound statement that provides grounds for everybody in a very responsible manner to criticise government. He said we should be citizens and not spectators. Meaning that as citizens, we should not remain as onlookers. But we should be citizens who carry a responsibility to even keep government on its toes,” the spokesperson said.
Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu added that, “Make inputs where the need arises and in my view, this is the ground which the Catholic Church comes out to make some of these statements.”
He therefore insisted that the Catholic Bishops are justified in their criticism and therefore should not be subjected to any ill treatment.
