The Founder and President of a group called the Concerned Voters Movement (CVM) Mr Razak Kojo Opoku, has defended Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on a saga surrounding free cars promised to motorcycle riders aka Okada riders in the build up to the 2020 elections.
In a write-up sighted by MyNewsGhana.net on Wednesday, August 25, Mr Opoku said that Dr Bawmia never promised free cars to Okada riders as has been widely speculated by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and other critics including the Founding President of IMANI, Mr Franklin Cudjoe.
In a bid to clarify matters, Mr Razak Opoku said that Dr Bawumia rather proposed that okada riders are given opportunities to buy safer vehicles under lease and pay over conditions.
“Dr Bawumia and NPP Government on the other hand proposed that We give the Okada riders an opportunity to buy safer vehicles through lease and pay over a period of time. At no point in time did the Vice-President, Dr Bawumia say he was going to offer free vehicles to the Okada riders” he said.
He however added that the proposal was not followed through because the Okada riders bought into the lies by Mr John Mahama who offered to legalise the okada business should he win the 2020 elections.
To this end, he said that “The Okada Riders Association openly campaigned, endorsed and voted for John Mahama during the 2020 general elections. They fully rallied behind John Mahama with their campaign platform dubbed, “Get Okada Votes Campaign” for John Mahama in the 2020 general elections.”
Going forward, he said that the high purchase policy proposal is still on the table hence admonishing Okada riders to engage the government on the issue.
“Notwithstanding the rejection of Dr Bawumia’s Hire Purchase Policy by the Okada Riders in 2020, if they have repented and are willing to cooperate with Government, I think the Government will put measures in place for the Okada Riders to acquire safer vehicles through lease and later pay over a period of time with a payment plan” he added.
