Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has lambasted his own party officials over the rise in illegal mining activities in the country.
The maverick politician said the destruction of water bodies in the country caused by galamsey is disheartening such that the people living in rural areas will soon not get water to drink.
To him if the president is fighting the canker and he does not go after his own party executives, the fight will fail because there are top party officials who have concessions and are engaging in illegal mining and sabotaging the fight against the illegal plowing of land for gold.
“I pity President Akufo-Addo because with this fight, if the president does not clean his hous we will not win the fight against galamsey. If I tell you the number of top NPP officials who are doing galamsey whom I fought and failed, you’ll be shocked,” Agyapong disclosed in a Ghanaweb.com report.
He argued that it was a good move for the government task force to burn excavators seized from illegal miners in forest reserves and around rivers.
“They have to burn the excavators or some of our people will go and sell them in Cote D’Ivoire or return them back to their owners,” the MP noted with worry that his party officials are not honest enough to confiscate the heavy machines and keep them without being compromised.
