Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, says no one will be spared in government’s fight against galamsey.

This statement by the Western Regional Minister is in line with the seizure of over 16 excavators operating illegally on the Tano River in the Western Region.

He says the seized excavators will be handed over to the Lands and Natural Resource Minister.

This action comes days after Water and Sanitation Minister, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, announced that government had provided patrol boats to protect Ghana’s water bodies to prevent the activities of illegal miners.

This move, according to the minister, forms part of government’s effort to stop the activities of illegal miners in the country and restore the purity of water bodies in the country.

Speaking on the seizure of the excavators with Kakyire Ofori Ayim on Atinka FM’s AM Drive, Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, hinted that government has plans of embarking on several water projects, but the intake points of these water bodies have been compromised by activities of illegal miners.

He noted that he will continue to tour these galamsey sites and clamp down on illegal mining in these areas.

“ The operators of the excavators were illegal miners who have no license. Unlike before where the fight against illegal mining was being handled from Accra, the responsibility has now been given to regional security council led by the regional ministers to ensure that the activities of these galamseyers are halted.  Our water bodies are under threat and we will plead with persons involved in the act to desist from it otherwise it will get to a time that we will not get clean water to do a lot of things”, Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah told Kaakyire Ofori Ayim.
