A Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Prisons Service, Assistant Superintendent of Prisons, ASP Samuel Kofi Opoku has advocated for Non-Custodial Sentences to ease congestion in the country’s prisons.
According to ASP Samuel Kofi Opoku, Ghana’s prisons are currently overwhelmed with inmates adding that should the laws include non-custodial sentences it will go a long way in reducing the congestion and deteriorating conditions in Ghana’s prisons.
The 44 prison facilities currently house over 12,900 inmates, a number which is way over the initial 9945 capacity prisons, he said.
“Our laws should be looked at to allow for non-custodial sentences, this I believe will contribute greatly in easing congestion in our Prisons,” he told Koforidua-based Freedom Radio.
His suggestion follows the conviction of Actress Rosemond Brown popularly known as Akuapem Poloo on Wednesday.
She has been remanded into custody to undergo a pregnancy test before her sentencing.
Akuapem Polo was charged with the publication of nude pictures with her seven-year-old son.
She’d pleaded not guilty when she was first arraigned but changed her plea from not guilty to guilty, on Wednesday, April 14, 2021.
In Court on Wednesday, the accused person pleaded guilty to all three charges and was convicted on her own plea by the court presided over by Her Honour Christina Cann.
