The Women with Disability Development and Advocacy Organisation has commended the Bank of Ghana for introducing a new implementation framework aimed at improving financial inclusion for persons with disabilities.

According to WODAO, the framework marks a significant step towards ensuring equitable access to banking and financial services, particularly for women and girls with disabilities who continue to face barriers in the sector.

The framework, issued on April 20, 2026, provides guidelines and timelines for regulated financial institutions to implement disability inclusion measures.

These include developing disability inclusion policies, upgrading infrastructure and service delivery channels to ensure accessibility, training staff to provide non-discriminatory services, and designing financial products tailored to persons with disabilities.

In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Veronica Denyo Kofiedu, the organisation also welcomed the Bank of Ghana’s decision to enforce compliance, including sanctions for institutions that fail to meet the December 31, 2026 deadline.

WODAO described the move as an indication of the central bank’s commitment to ensuring that the directive leads to measurable impact.

The organisation, however, called on financial institutions to go beyond compliance and treat the framework as a moral and developmental responsibility.

It urged banks to engage Organisations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) in designing inclusive services and to prioritise accessibility across both physical banking spaces and digital platforms.

WODAO further reiterated its readiness to collaborate with regulators, financial institutions and other stakeholders to support the effective implementation of the directive.

It stressed that financial inclusion should be seen as a right and not a privilege, noting that the framework presents an opportunity to build a more inclusive financial system in Ghana.
