Just before 3am UK time, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a “special military operation” in Ukraine.

Big explosions were heard in Ukraine’s Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odessa and other cities as Mr Putin spoke.

The borders of at least four regions of Ukraine have been breached by Russian forces, Sky News understands.

Multiple people are reported by Ukrainian authorities to have been killed already, including:

Six people in Brovary, near Kyiv
A boy who was killed when an apartment building was shelled in Kyiv
18 people caught up in a missile attack in Odessa
Three border guards
Smoke and fire have been seen coming from an airport in Mariupol, in southeastern Ukraine, where Ukrainian tanks have been spotted moving in.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said the government will provide weapons to people who want them, and those with military experience are being urged to join Ukraine’s defence.
