The Sofoline Branch Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) Mr Albert Boamah is advocating for the sacking of all regional and national directors of the Ghana Highway Authority.
The mandate of the Ghana Highway Authority is to provides Road Infrastructure Engineering and Management Services: project appraisal, feasibility studies and detailed design; contract preparation and administration; maintenance and operation; civil engineering materials prospecting and testing for roads, bridges, and road safety facilities at the best value – least cost to support the socio-economic development of Ghana and beyond.
The Sofoline Branch Chairman of GPRTU Mr Albert Boamah speaking on Ambassador Road Safety Campaign hosted by Osei Kwadwo on AMBASSADOR TV on YouTube monitored by MyNewsGh.com emphasized that Highway Authority Directors have failed to enforce road traffic regulations in the country.
According to Mr Albert Boamah, Ghana records a high rate of accidents and casualties because Highway Directors have failed to fulfill their core mandate.
“They have failed and gradually made the Highway Authority one of the bogus institutions in Ghana. If I have the opportunity to take decisions in Ghana, I would have sacked all Highway Directors across the country and appointed serious and competent people who are ready to help the country” Mr. Boamah said.
“I have visited all the highways in the 16 regions and since 2016 till date, it is difficult to see road signs which are supposed to help drivers and reduce accidents in the country”.
He added “I’m not saying there won’t be any accident on our roads when there are road signs but it will help reduce unnecessary and unwanted accidents in our major roads. Road signs communicate and direct drivers on roads”.
Mr. Albert Boamah added, “It is so pathetic that only drivers are blamed when the accident occurred but Highway Authority directors who failed to enforce Road Safety Law go scot-free without any punishment”.
