In September 2012, I believe. And at the invitation of Her Ladyship Gloria Mensah-bonsu I found myself at the Great Hall of the University of Ghana, Legon one fine afternoon. Evans, for what for?
Well, newly qualified lawyers in Ghana were being called to the Bar, and ‘my’ Mama Gloria (as I’m used to calling her) thought I should be one of her family and friends to witness that historic event of a lifetime. And historic it was!
Writing this piece called for reminiscing. Reminding myself of some other personalities of the legal fraternity whom I know belong to that cohort. Of course, Senior William Kofi Owusu Demitia of UG Law School comes tops. (A flashback of that brief exchange he had with President J.A. Kufour on stage still lingers). Who else comes to mind? Oh yes! Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor, that dynamic youthful Minister for Lands and Natural Resources! Then there was the lady on fire for the Lord, Lady Rev. Lois Impact – Rimi of Grace Grace Citadel Church. Last but not least is the woman I would like to spotlight today: Yaa Agyapomaa Nsiah, Esq.
Yaa is a Senior Legal Counsel with the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre – GIPC. I could go on and present a dossier on this fine legal brain, but I bet that which I learnt recently, perhaps, aptly describes the mother of two boys: “Yaa is so mentally organised the last thing to impress her is a surprise” explained Samuel Awuah Tetteh, her better half.
In 2016, when we had to plan, organise and register Great Age Global as a non-profit (a company limited by guarantee), I was amazed by Yaa’s willingness to assist me through the process. Eventually, she became and still is, the official company Secretary of #GreatAge, doubling as a member of the newly constituted Board of Advisors chaired by the Most Rev. Dr. Robert Aboagye-Mensah.
If you ever visited ICGC UPPER ROOM Temple you are most likely to have a share of that ever-warm-ever-welcoming smile of the lawyer who loves to serve as a chorister and hostess in her local church.
Guess what? Today, December 31 is her birthday!!! Counsel, keep smiling. And may your smile usher us into a New Year in which the world can begin to have a feel of a better normal life.
Happy birthday, Yaa!
